My passion for outreach reaches back to my graduate work with a number of initiatives that I coordinated, while conducting my graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania. Some of these initiatives included BPSOS, WorkReady, PAGES, EAGR, and Science Day. All of these initiatives aimed to support science education in K – 12 settings and were geared towards diversity and inclusion. For example, BPSOS is a community organization that supports the Viennese-American community in Philadelphia. In partnership with WorkReady, they offer internships that give high school students work experience and skills that impact their potential for college and career success. Through this initiative, I supervised two high school students who completed six-week-long projects on fruit flies and their experience of diapause. I also helped to run educational programs for a number of other outreach organizations in Philadelphia such as the PAGES Program, whose mission is to support young women in science. As a postdoctoral fellow, I developed and coordinated Sunday with a Scientist, “Evolution on the Wing” at the University of Nebraska State Museum. This event led visitors in activities to explore evolution. Hands-on discovery activities involved participants exploring wings from various species and learning about the diverse functions they serve. Since then, I have expanded my science outreach to include other populations such as young children (pre-school aged) and adults. A number of my current outreach initiatives, of which I am coordinator or Director, are featured elsewhere on my site. These programs include: Science Pub, Saturday with a Scholar, and outreach at the Museum of Biological Diversity. I also have extensive experience with preparing middle and high school science teachers with developing lab curricula.
